In Memoriam

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is with sad news that I inform the membership that Terry Leitz at the age of 71 died peacefully of natural causes while recovering from pneumonia on July 7, 2018. Terry’s hire date as a member of IBEW Local 1212 was November 1985. His work spanned four decades at CBS while working in the maintenance shop.

Terry’s roots began in New Orleans before leaving for New York. He worked as a broadcast engineer at WWL New Orleans. There he also served the title of Business Manager of IBEW Local 1139. Terry also had stops at NBC Burbank, WOR-TV, Reeves Teletape; and eventually CBS.

For those who knew Terry; he was described as a nice but quiet guy who was very knowledgeable in the field of Broadcast. He worked overnights for many years at CBS but managed to service this local with designing the Union’s website in the early 2000’s before handing it off to one of our current administrators. It should also be recognized and noted that Terry was a member of the Marine Corp and served in the Vietnam War.

Terry was survived by his wife, Lucille O’Brien Leitz; sister, Mary Ann, his children, Barbara Leitz Barnes and Robert Terrence Leitz; grandchildren, Blake Harris Barnes, Madison Barnes, Cameron Barnes, Robert Terrence (Beaux) Leitz, Jr. Lacey Leitz, Meghan Leitz McLeod and great grandchildren, Ayden Leitz, Rylee Leitz, McKenzie Leigh Leitz; as well as many others that knew and loved him.

Terry’s services were last week with a viewing and a Mass service. He is already missed, and our condolences go out to his family at this time. Thank you for serving our country and thank you for your time as a member of this local Brother Leitz. Rest in peace.

Fraternally,

Business Manager – IBEW Local 1212

Union workers on strike from Golf Channel

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

IATSE went on strike against the Golf Channel on January 13, 2018.  As you may know, the Golf Channel is owned by Comcast NBCU.  The collective bargaining agreement expired last June 2017.

Many IBEW members have been inquiring about the possible impact of the strike on the work we do for CBS or Fox Sports.  The IBEW does not have any collective bargaining agreements with the Golf Channel.  However, we do work for CBS, which is contractually obligated to the PGA to provide early round coverage, wherever it airs.

It has been and will remain one of our core tenets not to perform struck work.  Section 1.07(b) of our agreement with CBS specifically provides that CBS will not “use the services of any Technician for the purpose of assisting any company in breaking any strike or effectuating any lockout.”    If CBS is doing work for the PGA, as it has done in past years, that work is not considered struck work and will remain a work assignment from CBS.

However, if the Golf Channel asks a member to come work for it directly, that would be performing struck work.  Section 1.07(b) also provides: “No Technician shall be penalized by the Employer for refusing to cross a picket line which is lawfully established as a result of a strike by members of the AFL-CIO” but does not obligate CBS to pay any Technician who refuses to cross a picket line.  It is an individual decision whether to cross a lawful picket line.

I hope this clarifies some of the questions that have been raised by members.  If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Ralph Avigliano
