IBEW International President Retires!

This is a letter from Edwin D. Hill former President of IBEW:

Dear International Office staff,

After nearly six decades of service to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, I am retiring as International President effective June 1.
I came to this decision after much thought and reflection, concluding it was the right time for the next generation of IBEW leadership to come to the fore.
Upon my recommendation, the International Executive Council has appointed Sixth District Vice President Lonnie Stephenson to be the next International President.
I wish Brother Stephenson all the best in his new endeavor. And I ask you to give him your complete support as he moves into his new role.
I also ask you to continue to support International Secretary-Treasurer Sam Chilia. I have been lucky to have him as my working partner and I thank him for all that he does for the IBEW. From overseeing health care to planning for the 2016 convention, Brother Chilia plays an invaluable role in our union – and will continue to do so.
And I have been blessed to have such a talented and devoted staff – both at the IO and across North America. The things I have accomplished in the last 18 years are due in large part to your energy and efforts. I want to thank every last one of you for everything you have done – not only for me but for our great brotherhood.
It has truly been an honor to work with all of you. I wish you well as you continue to serve the IBEW.

Edwin D. Hill

Employers must post 300A injury/illness summary form February through April

OSHA is reminding covered employers to post OSHA’s Form 300A, which summarizes the total number of job-related injuries and illnesses that occurred during 2014 and were logged on OSHA’s Form 300, the log of work-related injuries and illnesses. The summary must be posted betweenFeb. 1 and April 30, 2015, and should be displayed in a common area where notices to employees are usually posted.

Employers with 10 or fewer employees and employers in specific low-hazard industries are normally exempt from federal OSHA injury and illness recordkeeping and posting requirements. Due to changes in OSHA’s recordkeeping requirements that went into effect Jan. 1, 2015, certain previously exempt industries are now covered. Lists of both exempt and newly covered industries are available on OSHA’s website. Visit the Updates to OSHA’s Recordkeeping Rule Web page for more information on recordkeeping requirements.

FCC and OSHA hold unprecedented event; announce working group to prevent fatalities in telecommunications industry

OSHA launches a national dialogue on hazardous chemical exposures and permissible exposure limits in the workplace

dangerOSHA is launching a national dialogue with stakeholders on ways to prevent work-related illness caused by exposure to hazardous substances. The first stage of this dialogue is a request for information on the management of hazardous chemical exposures in the workplace and strategies for updating permissible exposure limits.

“Many of our chemical exposure standards are dangerously out of date and do not adequately protect workers,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels. “While we will continue to work on issuing and updating our workplace exposure limits, we are asking public health experts, chemical manufacturers, employers, unions and others committed to preventing workplace illnesses to help us identify new approaches to address chemical hazards.”

OSHA’s PELs, which are regulatory limits on the amount or concentration of a substance in the air, are intended to protect workers against the adverse health effects of exposure to hazardous substances. Ninety-five percent of OSHA’s current limits, which cover fewer than 500 chemicals, have not been updated since their adoption in 1971. The agency’s current PELs cover only a small fraction of the tens of thousands of chemicals in commerce, many of which are suspected of being harmful.

The comment period will close on April 8, 2015. In the coming months, OSHA will announce additional ways for the public to participate in the conversation. For more information, see the news release and visit OSHA’s Web page on preventing occupational illnesses through safer chemical management.

FCC and OSHA hold unprecedented event; announce working group to prevent fatalities in telecommunications industry

graphIn an unprecedented event Oct. 14, the Department of Labor and the Federal Communications Commission joined leaders in the telecommunications industry, including major carrier AT&T, to discuss new and continuing efforts to prevent worker fatalities on cell towers.

“The fatality rate in this industry is extraordinarily high – tower workers are more than 10 times as likely to be killed on the job than construction workers,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels. “But these deaths are preventable.”

U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez and FCC Chairman Thomas E. Wheeler also announced a new working group that will collaborate in the development and implementation of recommended safety practices for the growing telecommunications industry.

“The cellphones in our pockets can’t come at the cost of a worker’s life,” said Secretary Perez. “We know we can’t solve this problem alone though, and that’s why I am so glad to be joined in partnership on this issue with the FCC and major carriers like AT&T. It’s a perfect example of federal agencies and industry breaking down barriers and identifying common goals to save workers’ lives.”

For more information about the new working group, view a recording of the event and read the news release. To learn more about worker safety in the telecommunications industry, visit OSHA’s Communication Towers Web page.

Labor Day Parade

Labor Day Montage1On Saturday, September 6, 2014, IBEW members and Executive Board members marched in solidarity in the Labor Day Parade.

Labor Day Parade Tomorrow

For your enjoyment, please watch and share this video about the 2014 LDP – One City.  5 Boroughs.  All Workers. starring many of your brothers and sisters in the Labor Movement.

Don’t forget, we march rain or shine!

A couple of quick reminders:

  1. Buses waiting for marchers park on 5th Ave north of 70th/71st Sts.
  2. Motorcycles line up on 47th St from 5th Ave east.  If you are having bikes ride with your contingent and you haven’t let me know, please do so.
  3. Until about 11am the CLC will have a table set up on 44th St on the East side of 5th Ave.  Any problems or questions look for us there.  After 11am we will be on 5th Ave moving north as the assembly area empties.
  4. I was asked to remind folks not to throw things (like t-shirts) into the crowds.
  5. Speaking of t-shirts, if you have any extras, keep in mind the hard working volunteers (wearing orange vests) who have sacrificed marching with their union to help facilitate the parade.

Thank you once again for all of your work!

Any questions, give me a call.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.
